Description:

Federal Hocking High School is a small, public school located in rural Southeast Ohio. It serves students in grades 9-12, around 40% of whom would receive free and reduced lunches - that is, if we didn't already offer free breakfast and lunch to all of our students. In fact, we're proud to say that we offer the families of our district a free education: free breakfast and lunches, no school fees, and no fees for extracurricular activities.

One important essential question we are working to figure out this year is: How can we continue to work within the framework of the 10 Common Principles to prepare our students to succeed academically in today's test-centric educational environment?

Our school is defined by connections: connections between students, teachers, community members, and local organizations. These connections are the foundation of our work. They form a safety net for our most vulnerable; they are the conduit for meeting the diverse needs of the student body; and they make Federal Hocking a uniquely supportive and positive school.

One current challenge we are facing is how to help our students translate their positive learning experiences into public success, especially in the area of state-mandated assessments.
