Job Description:
Responsibilities 1. Teach a full course load of three – five academic classes of 18 students each 2. Develop and teach science labs, including the ordering, tracking and maintenance of lab equipment. 3. Serve as an advisor and advocate for 18 students. The role of advisor requires facilitating communication between the student, his or her family, other teachers, and the student support team, as well as monitoring student attendance, academic progress and overall student wellness. 4. Prepare and lead a daily student advisory period of up to one hour. 5. Prepare and teach an elective class to interested students. 6. Collaborate with other teaching staff to develop interdisciplinary and project-based curricula and alternative assessments such as portfolios and exhibitions. 7. Participate in the development and success of Assessment Week, Symposium, Open House, Garden Day and other community and all-school events. 8. Participate in weekly program specific and all-school meetings. 9. Participate in all professional development and curriculum planning activities. 10. Support and coach students to pass the MCAS. 11. Adhere to and assist in accomplishing the school accountability plan. 12. Assist in developing independent projects for students in the Distance Learning program. 13. Perform other related duties to assure smooth school functioning.

Qualifications:
Qualifications A. Required: A successful candidate will … • Possess the core competencies of excellent teaching including: charisma, compassion and intellectual curiosity. • Be able to interact with young people in a respectful and caring manner. • Be student centered and committed to coaching students towards success, devoting additional time if necessary. • Be committed to designing and implementing a competency based curriculum and participating in experiential education initiatives. • Have or be able to qualify for content area certification in the State of Massachusetts. (see www.doe.mass.edu for requirements and explanations) • Be able to teach and assess students with different talents and learning styles using a variety of methods. • Assist with the development and implementation of individual student learning plans including special education plans (IEPs and 504s). • Have experience with curriculum development. • Have a strong commitment to supporting reading and writing across the curriculum. • Have a commitment to working with the families of our students and with parenting students. • Have a commitment to working in a diverse environment that affirms pluralism --- economic, racial, religious, linguistic, physical ability, sexual orientation, national origin, age, gender, etc. B. Preferred: Please have… • Bilingual Spanish a strong plus. • Dual certification in Special Education a strong plus. • Masters degree a strong plus. • Prior work or volunteer experience with non-traditional students in an alternative setting. • Experience with any of the following: project-based learning, portfolio assessment, competency-based education, cooperative group work, integration of technology and cross disciplinary learning, expeditionary learning, alternative assessments and integrating school to career experiences into the curriculum. • Familiarity with the Ten Common Principals of the Coalition of Essential Schools. • A sense of humor.
