Job Description:
North Central Charter Essential School (NCCES) is a public school where students are known personally, challenged intellectually, and expected to participate actively in their learning. Guided by its commitment to diversity and inclusiveness, the school seeks to send graduates into the work who think for themselves, care about others and act creatively and responsibly. NCCES students come from 30 communities across central Massachusetts and cross socio-economic, cultural, geographic boundaries and include students of all learning abilities. NCCES is seeking a full-time Coordinator of the Teacher Apprentice Corps. This new program, funded through the Commonwealth Corps program, will increase the capacity of NCCES to serve its students, increase the number of people available to serve in volunteer roles at the school, and increase the number of NCCES students, staff and families and staff serving in volunteer roles in the region. The Coordinator will supervise, facilitate and mentor six part-time Teacher Apprentices who will be working closely with and support grade level teams of teachers to help identify, support and codify specific volunteer needs in the school. This is a critical role requiring a passion for education and a willingness to commit to a 10-month, full-time commitment (September 2008 through June 2009). Retired teachers, professionals considering a move to a career in education and recent college graduate with experience in education and community service are particularly encouraged to apply. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES  Coordinate the recruitment, selection, training and recognition of the Teaching Apprentice Corps members;  Provide supervision, guidance, support and mentoring of Teacher Apprentice Corps members;  Facilitate the integration of the Teacher Corp Apprentices into their grade level teams of teachers;  Ensure effective communication between NCCES staff and corps members including introducing the program to teachers prior to the hiring of the part-time Apprentices.  Coordinate a reflective process for the Apprentice Corps including the collection of logs and bi-weekly program reflections identifying tasks accomplished, work underway and obstacles that need to be addressed;  Coordinate NCCES high school apprentices (in grades 11 & 12) including scheduling and collection of logs and monthly program reflections;  Survey NCCES Teachers to determine the effectiveness of the support provided by the Teacher Apprenticeship Corps and NCCES high school apprentices;  Collect and compile volunteer roles and responsibilities identified by Apprentices and teachers into a manual and management system; and,  Assist Teacher Apprentices with the recruitment of NCCES family volunteers

Qualifications:
• Proficient in Microsoft Office products, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel  Self-motivated, capable of working independently and as part of a team.  Ability to collaborate in a group setting and work effectively with diverse populations  Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills  Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills  Able to manage, advise, mentor and work collaboratively with students and adults.  Good academic record  Willingness to meet the demands and challenges of working with adolescents  Some experience managing volunteers or leading volunteer projects or personal volunteer experience  Able to represent NCCES in a professional manner at all times  Committed to completing the program year at NCCES.  Satisfactory CORI/SORI (criminal background check) report  Bachelor's degree preferred, or 5-7 years of similar or related experience in lieu of a degree;  Must be 18 years old and a Massachusetts Resident (proof of residency required)  Interest in service, education and nonprofit work  Available to start by mid-September 2008  Professional references Other Desirable Qualities  Demonstrated effectiveness in working with students and colleagues in educational setting as educator, advisor, and leader.  Demonstrated experience with assessing and evaluating programs; managing qualitative and quantitative data; and promoting and celebrating contributions.  Interest in 7-12 education, youth leadership, youth voices, youth development and youth as community development resources  Experience in program management and development a plus  Strong knowledge of and commitment to community service/community service learning

Salary & Benefits:
Up to $17,000 Stipend
